News was out that Sergeant Andrew Llewellyn and K-9 Officer Zane were visiting John Jay Middle School’s Animal Care Club … and the Best Buddies Club, the Podcasting Club and the Kindness Club came along, too!
The visit was one of many engaging, animal-related activities of the Animal Care Club, advised by teacher Jane Williams. The club is one of nearly 30 after-school clubs and activities at the school—each designed to help students learn about themselves, develop skills, and connect with others.
Students were fascinated that Officer Llewellyn gave commands to the German shepherd in German! They learned that Zane tracks people and narcotics; he can run 30 mph and he is trained to apprehend suspects by clamping onto their shoulder with his mouth.
The eight-year-old, 90 pound police dog lives with the Llewellyn family and their other dogs, but doesn’t play with them. “For Zane, work is his fun and games,” said Officer Llewellyn. He told the students that many dogs are bred to be working dogs and suggested that they train their pet dogs to do a task. “Even a Corgi?” asked one student. “Yes!”
Students had tons of questions and dog stories of their own to share. So much so that they only had five minutes for the best part … petting Zane!
Thank you, club advisor and teacher Jane Williams for setting up the visit, and to Officer Llewellyn and K-9 Officer Zane for your time!
