celebrating veterans

There was no such thing as “hold your applause” at the November 8 Veterans Day Assembly at John Jay Middle School.

The sounds of appreciation at the all-school gathering ranged from spontaneous clapping during the moving memorial slideshow to a “bring the house down” standing ovation for the assembly’s special guests—16 local veterans—as a student escorted each into the gym.

Dana Fernandez, who served in the Army, walked in with her sixth-grade son Leo. Raymond Glick, who served as an Army medic, was escorted by his sixth-grade grandson Charlie. Aaron Mischler, who served in the Navy, was accompanied by his eighth-grade daughter Samantha.

Other guests, including John Lemke, representing the Lewisboro Veterans Advisory Committee, and Jim Polos, a member of Bedford’s Veterans Advisory Committee, were paired with student leaders for the event.

The assembly was as much for the students as it was for their guests. The importance of respect and gratitude was conveyed in Principal Jeff Swiatowicz’s demeanor as well as his remarks.

“Veterans Day is just one day,” said Principal Swiatowcz. “But remember that every day we should thank those who have had the courage, bravery and honor to defend our country.”

Students showed poise and care in their contributions to the assembly.

presentation of the flag

Natalie, Gabrielle and Leah read essays celebrating veterans. Alison, Luke and Swara presented the flag; Daniel, Cannon, Gavin, Melena and Jade led the Pledge of Allegiance; and Aubrey and Ava delivered the national anthem as a duet. Nicole, Eleneh and Cannon presented a wreath in memory of servicepeople who did not return.

The centerpiece of the assembly was the video montage created by Library Media Specialist Jenn Useted which featured more than 60 service men and women related to the school’s students and educators. The stream of photos depicting young people in uniform—many now gone—was impactful and moving.

The assembly closed the way it opened—with a standing ovation for the veterans. “On behalf of the John Jay Middle School community we thank each and every one of you for your service and sacrifice,” said Principal Swiatowicz. “Thank you for being here and thank you for your service to our country!”
