The eighth graders gaze at the screen as one, eyes flitting in the same direction, and relive their time at John Jay Middle School. Laughter ripples across the rows, punctuated by raised eyebrows here and there. Only the most surprising images cause students to glance away from the screen—but just for a second—lock eyes with a nearby friend and smile.
The 8th grade slide show, coordinated by teacher Sean Murphy, is one of the centerpieces of John Jay Middle School’s Eighth Grade Moving Up Ceremony. It delivers three years of field trips, spirit days, class projects, club events, and more in ten minutes, and offers students a glimpse of how much they’ve grown in all aspects of their lives.
“I’m proud to say that each of you have become more independent,” said Principal Jeff Swiatowicz, in his welcome.
Student Nat Mandel led rising ninth graders, their guests, teachers and administrators in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Nalani Nosworthy gave a stirring rendition of the National Anthem.
Student Council President Owen Danelewich addressed his classmates, recalling that when they arrived as sixth graders, John Jay Middle School was “a Titanic building.” “But by the end of the year, it got a whole lot smaller.”
Assistant Principal Mike Pompa recognized students with two years on Honor Roll, and those who received President's Education Awards for academic excellence. Assistant Principial Catherine Graybosch asked Homebase Leaders and Student Mentors to stand. “Thank you for being leaders in your class and making John Jay Middle School a better place.”
Class Counselor AnneMarie MacSweeney remarked on the growth she’s seen in the class over the last three years. Principal Swiatowicz offered the students five tips for success, including “try something new.” The growth continues.
“We wish you all great happiness and success as you begin new adventures,” said Principal Swiatowicz. “Congratulations!”
